Great White killed in the Sea of Cortez

Had to share this because it’s such a blasphemy! Wish it didn’t still go on, but shark finning is still a widespread act!

This is quoted directly from Chris Fischer of Shark Men:

Just received an unconfirmed report that a mature female GW was killed in the Sea of Cortez three weeks ago just N of Loreto, Baja.

Apparently 350 kilos of fillets were salted and sent to the mainland of Mexico and the fins were sent to Asia for shark fin soup.

As many of you know we have previously tracked a mature female from Guadalupe island to the Sea of Cortez during this time of year to find the GW birthing grounds.

We are trying to find out if the GW killed a few weeks ago was pregnant but it is tough to come by this sort of information in such a remote place.

We have been working with our scientists in Mexico to get with policy makers in Baja so we can protect the Guadalupe GWs when they use the Sea of Cortez in the late Spring and early Summer.

So far we have made little progress but we will not stop pushing.

Continuing to attempt to collect data to confirm details above.”

For those of you that don’t know, the crew of Shark Men (Nat Geo) have been trying to discover the locations where GW sharks give breed & birth. And JUST when they thought they were getting somewhere, the female shark they thought would assist them in this search was killed! Not to mention, killed for MEAT!

I will definitely blog more about this at a later date, as I have much to comment about this, but there has been much attention directed towards shark finning lately. We need to try to get shark finning stopped! Most recently, shark finning activism efforts have been directed towards activities in Toronto, Canada:

Shark fin ban proposed for Toronto

About Brittany Hahn

I’m Brittany Hahn. I graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Psychobiology, and am now attending veterinary school. I decided to start this blog so that I can tell people the things affecting the creatures that I care so much about. My hope is people will be touched after reading about my feelings of desperation about these ongoing cruelties, at least in some ways. It truly hurts me that our generation is so apathetic towards the sufferings of marine animals. I know that there are so many other horrible things in this world, but I think that if we all cared a little more, and if we all helped a little more, we could make this world a little brighter. It’s easier not to care, but that doesn’t mean that it’s right.

One Response to Great White killed in the Sea of Cortez

Just read on a facebook page that there have been two great whites netted in the Sea of Cortez south of San Felipe – around km. 31 by Bahia Santa Maria. One was 6 ft in length and the other was close to 8 ft. Is this a common occurance in that area? I felt you should know about this Brittany. Sincerely,
    Debbi Moore
